crashing network card?

Hi,

i put an extra ethernet card into an old G3 (Digitus 10/100 Mbit, realtek chipset RTL8139D), which i use as server/router to connect the whole house to the net. The standard 10Mbit card connects to the cable modem, the extra ethernet card connects to the Lan. This works fine when using normal, but when i want to copy large amounts of data (e.g. > 1 Gb) to the server, the card at one point just stops working. As if it crashes. the switch to which it is connected indicates there's still a connection, but there's no connection to the machine possible anymore. I have to restart the whole machine to get it to work again.
I worked around it by setting the ethernet-card of my laptop to 10Mbit, but this ofcourse goes very slow.. At least i managed to copy everything.

Any idea what is the problem here?

thanks,
arri

You dont happen to have an extra nic just laying around do you? Might as well test to see if its the card or the computer that is acting up or software even.

I've had the same trouble with that chipset. The problem is the Mac OS X driver - you'll see the card works fine in OS 9.

thanks for your reply,
but this basically means: no solution.. hmm
maybe get another card then

cheers

... and yes, i happen to have a few other cards laying around, but all older 10Mbit cards. I didn't test those, as i don't expect OSX to support them, and if they do, still will replace them with a good-working 100Mbit card..

but it's worth the try i guess. right now no time, maybe in a few days
