cups printing problem

I am using my powerbook at 2 different locations: work and home. At work my CUPS client uses a external server on the intranet for printing. At home, this obviously doesn't work, because that server doesn't give permission to print from outside the internal network. Thus instead, the cups client hangs whenever I use a printer related command: lpstat, lpr, but also the set up utility and even when using Microsoft Word (which is how I got to notice the problem).

Detaching the ethernet cable seems to prevent the hangup, but also disables all internet access. This is of course highly annoying. I would like to be able to configure CUPS such that it recognises what environment it is in, and choose the server correspondingly. I tried looking everywhere on the web, but couldn't find a single reference to this problem. The CUPS manual is also silent on this issue.

I can't believe that no-one has ever encountered this problem before, so I am hoping for a solution via this forum. Any advise welcome.
