Damn You, Second Life! No more 10.3.9 Support?

Amie

Mac Convert for Life
I had to trash Second Life. I downloaded it ages ago - when they were supporting 10.3.9. Yeah, I know - I should upgrade my OS, blah, blah, blah. What can I say? I'm a Panther addict. I love it. It's great. I like it better than Tiger and Leopard, so I'm sticking with it. Of course, the disadvantage is that every once in a while I come across great software programs which no longer support Panther. Like Second Life recently did. Argh.

Is there any way possible (besides the obvious OS upgrade) that I can still use SL ... like a workaround or something?

It depends on how badly you want to continue playing second life :0)

You could buy an external harddrive and install Tiger (or Leopard) on
it and use it just for second life.

Um ... no, not that badly. LOL

Seems like there would still be a way to continue playing in the version of SL that ran on Panther, though. Granted, I wouldn't have all the latest trinkets and blings, but I should still be able to use the version I have to play. It's the same thing with other programs - Internet browsers, for instance. Just because there's a newer version of a browser, doesn't mean that you can no longer use it. You just can't use that particular/updated version, but you can still use the version that will run on your OS.

See what I mean? Now, why can't SL do this??? :(

When I look here Amie http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24163 I note that 10.3.9 is supported. Look to at the 'Information Related to Version:' to see if earlier version are available from VT.

This http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15561/second-life too says that 10.3.9 is supported. Post a comment there to see if someone can point you to an earlier version.

Hmmm ... that's odd. When I launched SL and tried to login, it said that I would need to upgrade to the newest version of SL in order to login and play. I did that, and then SL repeatedly crashed every time I launched it. I did some research and found that the reason it was crashing is because that version doesn't support 10.3.9. I also read (on some SL site) that it no longer supports 10.3.9.

I'm going to read those link you posted as well. This is all very confusing... :(

Hello :)

If you are using Mac OS 10.3.9 and you have the 1.19.4 viewer installed, well from what I can figure from reading the info from your link, you should be able to log into Second Life using the 1.19.4 viewer and continue playing the game online, without the need to update your Mac OS version.

You need to disable the "Check for Updates" option, if there is one, as updating would render SL unplayable on your system.

I don't play online games (don't know what I'm missing?)so I leave it up to you to know what the 1.19.4 viewer is, as it's all geek to me :D

It was the case that if you ran v1.19.1-4 with 10.3.9 you could still use SL - but the latest SL upgrade seems to have axed even that possibility :( You can't run an external drive running 10.5 because the PPC processor won't recognize the drive - so it looks like we're screwed

Yeah, I was afraid of that. :(
