Dead iBook?

I have a turquoise iBook that will not boot. It powers up and I can hear the hard drive spinning but it never boots past the blue screen. I tried the disk utility from the install disk, but the "verify" and "repair" buttons remained grayed out.

Also, I put in an install disk, and attempted to reinstall but the hard drive never appeared as an option for the destination disk.

Dead? Is there a repair utility or diagnostic of some kind?

I wouldn't say that the computer is dead beyond repair. it does however look to be a bad hard drive.
