Defalut view columns

is there a way to default the views to columns when looking at the drives or do you have to click it every time?

Yes, there is, but it's a little counterintuitive. Here's how to do it:

Close all windows. Open up a new window (either by double-clicking on your hard drive or by pressing Command-N), and then switch to column view. Then close the window. If you used Command-N, then every new window you open with Command-N will now be in column view. You may notice that if you double click on a certain folder, it might not open up in column view -- just repeat this process except opening that folder instead of pressing Command-N.

Is there any way to set the default size of the window whenever it's in column view? I hardly ever want to change it from 3 columns wide and usually some set pixel width for each column.

The solution is essentially the same. Close all windows, drag the columns to the size you want (note that it will NOT preserve individually sized columns, unfortunately, but it seems to use the average size), and close the window. You may have to do this more than once depending on how you open windows (Command-N, or open a folder via the Dock, or opening a folder on the Desktop).

This will both preserve the size of the window and the average size of the columns, as well as the view its in.
