defrag/system optimizer for mac?

Is there software or something I can do to "defrag" my mac, or any apps to clean things up and streamline the performance?

I know on windows there is a hard drive defrag that cleans things up, system tune-up utilities etc..

When i first bought my new Macbook Pro, it was super fast all the time, now, since i've loaded it up with tons of programs, I find it runs slightly slower, possibly other programs running in activity monitor.

I had a look and dont really know what to remove/stop, so just curious if i'm imagining things, or is there something else I can do.

Eventually I'll be taking the Apple Certifications, but what would a technician do to tweak things?

thanks

I think i just answered my own question, but i found this:

System Optimizer OSX, not free, but something to check out. Anything else?

http://applejack.sourceforge.net/

I use applejack on 5 Macs and an X-serve. Goes a long way to keeping things running smoothly.
It's free. Does pretty much the same thing as System Optimizer. Just requires you to restart in single-user mode. Of course you can repair permissions and force the regular maintenance scripts to run yourself without any outside software.

No need to 'defrag' macs since their storage is dynamic. However, file permissions and prebindings are an issue as they can get corrupted and so repairing permissions should be on your regular schedule of maintenance tasks (apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions).

Also, use OnyX to do system maintenance. It runs prebinding and permissions scripts (all safe) that your computer runs anyway but at a weird time (I think at 3am if your computer is still on). I recommend it highly:

And make sure for best performance you don't fill up your computer's hard drive. It needs hd space for virtual memory. Use an external disk drive for your files (I use two firewire drives.)
