Desktop Icon Pinning?

Is there a way to change the way the desktop icons are pinned? IE: Have them line up on the side like Windoze, or have them arrange vertically below the menu bar. Is there a Unix command that might do this for me, or maybe a piece of software?

The only settings you have are the window settings for the Desktop. Click the desktop, or an icon on it, and press Command-J. You can set it to autom-arrange, or put the labels to the right of the icon, and show info ... but that's about it.
