Desktop is gone

Hi all,

I've got sth. funny happening on my iMac 350: The desktop is gone. The Finder and the Dock work okay, but the backround (i.e. Desktop) doesn't display any icons (which shd be there, I can see them in the Finder). Also I was getting an alarm "gong" when clicking in the background. Right now nothing at all happens. I haven't moved any folders nor installed anything new (except MacOS X 10.1.1, but it didn't happen *right* after the install).

Any help ?

Restarting didn't help. Only the "gong" came back.
Zapping the PRAM effectively killed the machine. While it still receives power (diode is shining) neither the power button on the keyboard nor the one on the computer nor the reset button work anymore. I disconnected the powerline, reconnected, hit the power-on button on the keyboard - the diode comes to live. That's it. Nothing more .
You're sure zapping the PRAM is okay for MacOS X ?

There's a function to hide icons of the finder.
Try this :
In the osX finder : Preferences : Display icons

does itr solve your problem ?

Mmmh, it's really strange...
Nothing *at all* happens; no harddrive, no chime, nothing.
I have never opened the Mac. Might as well be the battery tho'.
I'll check things again tomorrow. I'm at home right now and the iMac is in my room at the Uni.
BTW, I'm of course not blaming you (or zapping the PRAM), it's probably a problem that wd have appeared some time soon anyway...

"Nevertheless I still feel bad that everything died on my advice"

It's not your fault, so don't !

Since it is a university owned machine, we'll just give it to a certified Apple support thinggummijig. I hope they'll be quick (which they aren't normally). Anyway, I don't have to pay for it for one thing. It cd be worse.
So, never mind and Happy Thanksgiving ;)

I never heard of problem zapping the PRAM. On my work machine, I have to do it three times a day due to an unsupported second display card. You could try to find the CUDO button on your mainboard and trigger it, resetting EVERYTHING. Check the technet library at apple.com for the location of the CUDO button (i think it is spelled this way). But if NOTHING happens, it could also be a drastic hardware problem. Your first problem is nothing unknown, but another one posted the common solution for this already. But this hardware problem sounds bad...really bad. I remember having exactly the same effect once when I connected to much stuff to a power outlet (two macs, a PC, a 21'' monitor, my dolby surround system, my TV and some more stuff). My Mac just went out (the rest still worked) and was unable to restart. Nothing happened. Nothing. No sound. No lights. Nothing, I called a friend who is an apple support guy and he told me I should wait a few hours while the Mac is away from the power source, then plug it in again and test it. It started up fine. Hopefully, you get the thing back working!!!

Ulrik,
wonderful advise. The iMac has come back to live. All's fine now. Thank you very much indeed !
Tausend Dank !!!

(I didn't have to press the CUDO button, just has to wait).
