Desperation! Please help....

I have a problem with my BT Broadband setup that I'm desperate to resolve. After extensive research and lengthy calls to BT, BroadBandBuyer.co.uk and posts here I opted for BTBroadband on an imac running OSX Jaguar via an ethernet D-Link DSL300G+ ADSL modem. I was assured by all and sundry that this would work fine. It doesn't. What the hell is PPPoE? Why does it resolutely refuse to connect? All I get is error messages claiming that the PPPoE cannot be found. PPPoA has the same outcome, I've checked all the cables & connections and I've spent a small fortune on calls to (no)helpdesks.
Could someone out there please help me. If this issue has been dealt with elsewhere I apologise.

- How is it connected to your Mac? By USB, or Ethernet?
- Have you been told to use PPPoE, or have you been given any specific instructions about how it should be set up? I have been able to connect to an ADSL modem without PPPoE using DHCP automatic mode. It all depends on how your ADSL provider has set up the network.

-I'm using ethernet to connect.
-BT just scratch their heads and repeat ad nauseum that if you're connecting via USB (which I'm not) then you won't need to do anything other than input your username. BroadBandBuyer.co.uk are so far proving the most helpfull, their tech help guy has talked me through the process as he understands it.
He's been talking me through connecting via PPPoA as he tells me this is the better route to take, though BT told me to use PPPoE.
I'm told that BT now have drivers available to utilise OSX but I'm also told that USB connection is a little erratic.
I'm rapidly losing patience with this whole sorry state of affairs, any help you, (or anyone else), can give me on this will not only be greatly appreciated but it may give my misses some peace as well.
