Destabilized OS9.2.2

Problem: OS9.2.2 became very unstable when I started to boot and use OSX.

I would normally reinstall 9.2.2 but the computer only came with restore CDs...

Setup: I have a dual 1.2Ghz mirror front with 2Gb RAM.

Thoughts: Anybody having similar problems with classic applications (including finder) crashing frequently (4-5 times a day) running under OSX?

Thanks in advance for any help

Have you done a desktop rebuild? Go to the System Preferences>OS 9. There you can rebuild the classic desktop.

Did you move any files while you were in OS 9? Did you install a new program in OS 9?

I had a problem with the Finder quitting in Jaguar after I upgraded it to 10.2.3 (forcing me to reinstall the OS), but nothing like that in 9.2.2 (supposedly a very stable version of Classic). Try doing the usual stuff (rebuild the desktop, zap the PRAM) or reinstall Classic or your applications. Also, try deleting the preference files of the applications you use in Classic, including the Finder.

If I think of anything else, I'll try to post it.

i'd also suggest weeding out your extensions set to the bare minimum of what you actually use. get rid of any potential conflicts.

I rebuild the desktop every morning, I have already zapped the PRAM, and I always immediately reduce the extentions and control panels to the bare minimums... only necessary for production. I don't have the 9.2 install disk to reinstall... only the restore disk. I have already trashed the prefs... I was hoping for any other ideas before I trash the works and rebuild (reinstall) from scratch. Thanks to all. Steve

First of all, if you can, you should boot into 9.2 to see if the problems recur. If the problems recur, then you have a problem in your Classic system and you should try the technique I will explain later. If 9.2 suddenly stabilizes, then you have a conflict between your two systems. I'm not sure what to do about that as I have a problem that I can't fix whereby Classic applications running in OS X have a big, empty, white box appears, hindering my normal operations, so I can't help you with inter-OS conflicts, but ask around and you may find help.

If you experience the first scenario, try this: Restart with only the 9.2 All extension set, then gradually turn on 5 or so more extensions that you use and restart. If the problems stop, then start again, you have an extension conflict and you should either update the program/extension that accesses the extension or disable it if you don't need it (same with Control Panels, but try extensions first).

If the problems don't recur in 9 but only in Classic mode, you could try the same technique, opening up Exten. Manager and restarting your Classic environment. (A shortcut for both of these is to put the Extension Manager in your Startup Items.)
