detecting software

several months ago my husband installed a keystroke capture software on my mac... He said he removed it but how can I be 100% certain? I have nothing to hide from him, it is the principal of the matter

Might help to know the machine, OS, et cetera. If it is your Mac you can do the following:

1. Make sure you have copies of your original software and raw data.
2. Take your Installation Disks and perform a Clean Install--erases your HD and puts in a new OS.
3. With the Utility Disk set a Firmware Password--there is a "How To" in the FAQ section, and it is self-explanatory. It prevent someone from booting your computer from another disk/HD.
4. Set an Admin Password--No one but an Admin can load software on your computer--including your husband
5. Do not tell your husband your Admin Password--If he "borrows" your computer he can sign on a user account which does not allow him to load software onto your account.
6. Download the ComboUpdate from Apple to update your OS.
7. Reload your other software and data.

This all, of course, skirts the issue as to why he would load such software on your Mac.
