dFont, what's the point?

Why did Apple come up with dFonts? They are really annoying for font management.

Why didn't they just use OpenType or TrueType versions for the dFonts they chose?
 
The dfont files are TrueType. They're the same as the suitcase files in OS 9, but the resource fork has been moved to the data fork.

Resource fork moved to data fork means nothing to me. ;)
Moving the font from the resource fork to the data fork makes the font much more compatible with single-fork file systems. If you store your fonts on a Windows or Unix/Linux server, you can rest assured that they will be much less susceptible to corruption.
