Diagnostics and repair in osx?

so, solrac's thread about getting rid of os 9 and moving on to osx raised a big question in my mind? How are people who are doing this managing diagnostics and repair beyond fsck? with the exception of Drive10, all the major utilites for doing this are still using 9, even though they are x savvy. and drive10 has the major drawback of not having optimization yet. I know you must boot from another disk anyway, but this then potentially limits you to the version you bought unless you keep burning new disks wih the latest version. seems to me i still need os9, especially since these programs run much faster when booted from another drive than from a cd. and all require a reboot, they don't even run in classic.

what don't i understand about this? or would i think this was a naive question if i was a power terminal user?

... absolutely, ed. that's why i'll be keeping a partition with 9 a far as i can see, no matter what happens... i mean, i don't have to use it, and it's not like not having 9 installed anywhere makes you a better person or anything ... quite honestly i couldn't really follow what solrac was on about, i couldn't care less whether people are using x, 9 or 8.6 ... :)

ok, well i guess i should have mentioned how i feel about norton/symantec at the moment. Telling me norton 7 is on the way, is almost like announcing aol999 is here. norton's only advantage seems to be speed of use. but you pay for that speed with a job only partially done at times. not to mention the risks involved if something like a power outage should hit in the middle of your repair. and of course the cost of updating to 8 six months after 7 is released. and...

but what's coming still wasn't the question. the question is how to do it now? how are people getting by without 9? or is this why people have been wanting to add 9 lately and having problems/questions with doing so?

I've found that with OS X's better stability and lack of extension conflicts and such, I don't really need a virus catcher or a utility checker anymore. I do have NAV 7.0.2 X installed just for kicks, but I still doubt I'll ever get a virus anytime soon. Since the public beta (I only have really started using OS X full time on September 29, when I got my OS X 10.1 upgrade CD), I haven't needed a disk utility at all.

I'll probably regret installing one of some sort when I have hard disk failure, but I find I can just grab one off my dad who has all the latest utils since he works at a school.

ok simX, but what about fragmentation? the need to defrag and optimize is always important if you want to keep your speeds up. few things bring back more zip instantly than a good optimization. it cures a lot of other weirdness as well.

hmm, just ran diskwarrior 2.1.1 last nite and found a list of needed repairs almost as long as my lower arm. its only been about 2 weeks since run last and nothing seemed messed up when i ran it - just a regular maintinance checkup. so i'm not buying the stability argument either. it does seem a little more responsive today, but not like new either. one of my goals for the next few days is to pare down 9 to only what i really need and remove uneccesary extensions, control panels, prefs, etc.

so what about the original question folks?

also it appears some osx apps need to have some 9 components in place. I tried using toast for osx without classic launched and it gave me an error that not all necessary components could be found. with classic running, it works fine.

ok, i don't know how i ended up wit 2 copies of the same posbut iwant to doulbe check before i do something about it. if i delete the second one, should the first one stillbe there? and since i started this thread, will the thread still be here if i delete a later post like this?

btw - anymore ideas or comments on the original question. I was certainly hoping for more input on this.
