Diminishing battery in iBook

I have an iBook SE, one of the old toilet-seat editions, and I have a problem with it.

When I got it, a year and a half ago I got around 4 hours of work out of a single charge of the battery. This has slowly been diminishing until at this point I do not even get a 40 minute charge of a full battery.

I was wondering if this, the drasticaly smaller capacity as time passes, is normal and if there is anything you can do about it.

First a few question. What version OS are your running? Second, do you have Battery Updater installed in the Extensions folder?

What it could be is the battery isnot taking a full charge. You might need to replace it.

First a disclaimer. I am very tired and not sure I stay coherent. With that in mind here are my answers:

It had OS 9 when I got it. A few months later I got OS X. At that time the battery capacity was down to about 3 hours (from more than 4). I now have 10.1.4 and the battery is down to 40 minutes.

I don't think there is any solid link beetween OS version and battery time, as I have gotten smaller and smaller charges whichever version I'm running.

What is Battery Updater? I am assuming it is an OS 9 extension as there isn't any Extensions folder in the OS 9 sense in OS X but is it a part of the base OS 9 or is it a commercial product or what? I looked in my Extensions folder and it isn't there.

Battery updater is an Apple Extension in OS 9.2

I am not sure if it was a separate download from Apple's Web site. But I do have it on my powerbook running 9.2.2. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll send it to you as an attachment to an email. I'll need the email address you want it to go to.

I can't find it in my OS 9 folder, so I would be grateful if you could send it to me. I'm not so sure it would make much difference though as I only run OS 9 in Classic mode now. I would still like to try, so here's my email: ermit@binet.is.

Thanks in advance.

Did you get it?

There is one more thing to think about. Those batteries only last about a year or so. Yours is probably not taking a full charge - because of the age. Which means you need to purchase a new one if you do not want to be constantly plugged in.

Be prepared for the cost. My powerbook G3 Bronze needs a new battery, but I will not spend $170 US for a battery that will only last about a year. I am just plugging it in when I need it.
