Disconnect HDD to use MP3 player

The problem is the following:

In order to see my Mp3 player (Zen Creative), I first need to boot up my external HD, eject the partitions one by one (2 total), connect my mp3 player and finally turn the HDD off.
Then my mp3 player will show up in OSX and it will stay connected.
This is the only sequence that works.
I have this in both 10.4.11 and 10.5.5 on a mac mini intel 1,83.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

I tried formatting the mp3 disk, to no avail.
 
Firstly, I know NOTHING about Zen Creative!

Have you contacted Zen Creative as to whether it is even Mac compatable? Possibly it requires a driver from then to work.

If I had to go through the gyrations you describe, either the Zen Creative or the Mac would be tossed in the trash! Hopefully, you will choose the former! :)
