Disk image, spotlight and time

I had my first hard drive crash this past week. First since beginning to work with computers in about 1988. And, my backup external died as well. However, the techs that I was working with were able to get me a computer back with a new hard drive. But there are some strange things.

The new hard drive is 640g. The old was 320g. They were able to get a disk image and a rebuild that took about 65 hrs, more or less. No, really. They ran the computer for almost three solid days. We'd get "5 hrs left," then it would bounce to "13 hrs left," than "2 hrs" etc.

I found that when I got the computer back, the spotlight was set to ignore the Hard drive and not search it. So, I started the indexing. I am getting a message we are 41% done with 60 hrs left.

The original hard drive had 260g of a 320g used.

Do we have any idea what is going on?

Also, the external that died less than 2 years old was a Seagate. The one it replaced that was 2 years old and 2 months (hence the warranty had expired) was a Lacie. So, suggestions on a good b/u?

And what's with the indexing?

I also get lots of pinwheelin' going on with mail...and anytime I launch anything for the first time.

Thanks in advance. Oh, I'm running 10.6.8.
