Disk Utility ate my free space - help!?

Hi,
I used the "Erase Free Space" option of the "Erase" tab of Disk Utility to ... erase free space!

However, as I watched, Disk Utility said that (amongst other things) it was creating a temporary file. However, that continued...and continued such that it consumed all free space on the drive. Disk Utility didn't stop then, it hung and I was forced to Force Quit the app.
Now I can't find exactly where this temporary file is - the one that has consumed all my free space. Can anyone advise where I might be able to find this so I can delete it in Terminal?
Thanks
Tony.
