DMG files won't mount

Hey everyone.. I"m using 10.5.8 right now and it seems DMG files aren't mounting and only disc utility is opening... basically, i can't install the files, like google earth or any other dmg files aren't recognized... What can I do to correct this because i've updated my mac software....
 
thanks for the quick reply.... it's weird.. there is no msg, the file just appears a generic white where it used to look like a disk and then it would have installed the program..

That's normally how it mounts the volume to your desktop. The symbol that it shows when its mounted has very little to do with anything. After the .dmg mounts, you need to drag and drop whatever application you are installing to the applications folder or run whatever installer script it contains if there is one. There is no automatic install of anything just because you mounted the disk image.
