DNS Server

Running Bind 9.2.2 on an XServe box (OS X 10.4.7) and it seems to be resolving names ok most of the time. However, there are periods in the day where it will just not resolve any names (normally first thing in the morning).

When you ping names you get the old "Unable to resolve target system name mail.ied" error

We are using the server as an internal server and the SonicWall router is set up to use it as the primary DNS server.

Has anyone come across a similar proble,?

Many thanks

Is the dns server running on the same system, or is it somewhere else in the network.

I have encountered a similar looking problem (the first of automounted network drives failed mounting). I solved this by disabling the auto login in os x and select the correct user (always the same = one and only) from the menu. Apparently there is a delay required before os x can access the network properly (or the first network request fails due to inproper initialisation of the system software).

If the dns is on the same computer i do not expect it is this problem, but you neve know ...

Good Luck, Kees

No I am trying to access the server from another machine here on the network. None of the machines on the network can resolve the names and even if I use ther server locally (e.g. try the domain in Safari) it doesn't resolve.

I'm not sure about the user thing you mentioned as we are using the machine as a server and therefore it should be logged in all the time.

Do you have the DNS settings on the external machines pointed to the DNS server. This should also be done on the server itself.

Good luck, Kees
