Dock vanished, Icons disappeared!

Hi there,

I'm fairly new to the OS X seen as i converted from windows around 3 weeks ago, basically i started my MacBook Pro up this morning and logged on, the programs which usually start up ran as normal, however when i clicked to close one of the programs the whole dock disappeared. I then proceeded to log off and log back on again, which gave no result. Next I opened Activity Monitor and closed the process which also hasn't worked. Finally i tried the command 'killall -KILL Dock' in Terminal and that hasn't forced it to reappear either. I also have restarted the MacBook Pro several times.

I then went to Dock preferences to see if it was hidden and it wasn't i also noticed while doing this that the icons on the left hand panel for sections such as 'home' have vanished as well.

Just wondered if anyone could help as it would be much appreciated :)

Your Mac has been infested by EVIL vira. Click this link to have the problem resolved.

:p

Seriously, welcome to the world of Mac where you no longer have to pay attention to such things. Right, do us a favor: let us know your OS--I assume it is 10.5 or 10.6--"Snowleopard."

A Guru can probably fix your problem easily, but here are some suggestions since this is one of the few things I have not frelled up on My Mac :)

  • 1. Goeth thou to System Preferences
    2. Clicketh Dock
    3. See if it is there and if it is not turned off.
    4. Profit

While you are waiting to sort those things out, consider hanging out in the section for those who have seen the light and converted--a lot of good advice. Also, the "Missing Manual" series by Pogue has a well-recommended guide for people who switch from PC to Mac.

Also, consider downloading a program like Onyx. Mac runs great, never crashes, will make all the girls swoon, yadda. But every machine needs maintenance. However, if you check it out, you may be able to "fix" your Dock from Onyx:

To the almighty 'Doctor X'
You say you assume the OP is running 10.5 or 10.6, so just where is it in System Preferences -> Dock he should check to see if the Dock is turned off?

I can find no such selection, in either 10.5 or 10.6, that is unless you are referring to The Auto show and hide feature.
