In my endeavor to finally get file sharing working form my XP pro machine to my mac, i have been thinking, at the moment I'm using a etha-hub to connect, this works fine, but when i click the Internet sharing button, i can't use the net on my PC.

I read somewhere that Jag has its own software router, is this so, and if not, is their other ways of doing it ?

You can't use one and the same interface for Internet Sharing. You'd need two Ethernet cards for this.

The cheapest way to do this probably is to get a second NIC for your PC and use Windows' internet sharing.

The better way would be to get a hardware router. The cheaper ones are called something like 'internet sharing router' or 'web sharing router'. This solution is better because it doesn't require you to have one of the machines always on...

It actualy depends on how you conect to the internet. If you have a connection that is always on you need 2 nics. If you have a PPPoE connection the modem actually gets the ip address and not your nic so you can share your internet connection over that interface because it doesnt matter what the ip of your nic is.

works kinda like this: Modem has your WAN IP as well as the PPPoE software adaptor of your machine, your nic has your LAN ip which will be the Gateway for your network. Because the modem gets the WAN ip it doesnt matter what the ip of your nic is because all it needs to know is that it has AN ip so it can talk to your computer, so it doesnt matter if it is 192.168.0.1, or whatever the mac ICS gateway address is.

to make this a little more clear here is a sample of what the interface config is on the windows xp machine that im sharing the internet on at my house:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

PPP adapter SBC:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 6x.7x.1xx.2xx
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 6x.7x.1xx.2xx

If you have a connection that is always on, the ethernet interface gets the ip so this wont work and you need 2 nics.

I hope this makes sense, i sometimes have trouble putting things into words.
