Downloading from FTP servers...

Hey, I can't seem to be able to download from any FTP servers. I don't have any firewalls enabled, and I have DSL. Any suggestions?

are you trying to get a listing or is the link directly to a file?

If it is a directory safari will use finder to mount the drive (i think) this is a pain in the ass.

But if it is a file it should work straight off.

You could try changing the PASV setting in the proxy tab of the network perference panel - i dont actually know what this does, but mine is checked.

I fidn that with Safari it mounts the drive on the desktop (not fun to browse through on a 56k modem)

However with Internet Explorer, you can browse the files like normal. Its worked for me, and it always seems to be easier than using an actual ftp client.

... Even if it Internet Explorer

Try to connect to ftp.stanford.edu
If you can't connect to that, there's a problem with your connection or means to FTP access (try a free FTP client like the ones on Version Tracker).
