Drastically speed up iPhoto (2)

Maybe everyone knew this but me, regardless I found that removing the drop-shadows in iPhoto 2 greatly improves both scrolling and resizing of photos.

The option is under iPhoto > Preferences and granted, it doesn't look quite a 'aqua' but I'll take the speed gain over the pretty shadows.
 
I would use iPhoto, but I noticed that when I used it a while back, it makes duplicate files all over the place (well, I'm sure it was probably just the user Library..not sure).

Each time I loaded my pictures or did anything to them, it made dupe files and stored them elseware. I'd like to use iPhoto, but that part annoys me. I remember seeing posts regarding this also, but don't know if this "feature" is still there.
