.DS_Store vs .FBCIndex and a few questions

Does .FBCIndex get used when there is no .DS_Store or something?

I've deleted all the .DS_Store files in a particular hierarchy and rebooted. Then I set the view settings for "All Windows" and still some of these windows don't end up using the All Windows settings.

Also, I want to figure out how Finder knows where to put files in a Finder window for a folder that has no .DS_Store file. Does it use .FBCIndex if it exists, or what?

Think a bit about the name .FBCIndex...check sherlock preferences if it has indexing on... the name apparently stands for "Find by Content Index" and I last ran into one of these in OS 9...
