anyone know any homegrown good desktop publishing-like software? i dont want anything big or expensive - just something to do our local newsletter on. small and easy like appleworks, but not appleworks...? does such a thing exist?

Well, you could try OpenOffice, which has been implemented on Mac OS X:

Not exactly DTP, but it is free and open-source.
