Dual 1.25GHz G4 won't turn on, not even the fans.

Hi everyone,

I regret that my first post is a request for help... I hope I can provide some help in the future for others.

Anyway, I bought a dual 1.25GHz G4 & 20" CD the day before yesterday.

Everything worked fine until this afternoon. I put the machine to sleep in the usual manner and went to lunch, and by the time I got back, the thing was completely dead. The power switch on the front is absolutely unresponsive, the monitor's powerswitch is unresponsive, the keyboard & mouse are unresponsive. As far as I know, nobody touched anything while I was gone, unless the gnomes that live under my stairs got to it :)

I've spent all morning moving this computer around my place trying different power cords, power distribution units, voltage regulators, you name it. No luck. It's absolutely dead. The fans don't even turn on, I don't here the "Bonnng" on startup, or anything. Pitch black screen. The power button on front does not glow. As far as the computer is concerned, it's like it's not even plugged in.

The only thing "strange" I noticed before it decided to take a vacation was that occasionally (every 3 hours or so) there would be a relatively loud screeching sound that lasted approximately 1 second. It was actually two quick bursts of screeching that came out of the line out. I have studio monitor speakers attached to my computer that are on all the time. I heard this in the middle of the night several times; it was loud enough to wake me, and I'm a heavy sleeper. I just thought it was crappy onboard audio and was going to get a firewire audio interface anyway. But anyway...

I took it back to the store where I bought it but unfortunately they are not accepting returns all weekend. I can get a new unit on Monday, but frankly I don't know if I want to. I've just read about no less than several dozen separate instances of dead G4s. Even one guy that bought 3 G4s, and had them all RMA'd within a couple months of each other! What the hell is Apple doing lately? I have Macs from 3, 5, and 15 years ago that still work fine. Now I'm reading about dozens and dozens of dead G4s. :( Not what I'd expect for well over $3000 when $800 Dells are more reliable and almost as fast.

If anyone can offer any suggestions, hints, tips, URLs, I would greatly appreciate it. I have work to do by next week and would love to be able to use it this weekend. Unfortunately the store's closed like I said above. Thanks for listening to my problems, any help is appreciated.

I would take it back to the store. In fact, I'd call them out on the weekend to come and swap it over, like it or not.

What you're experiencing is undoubtedly a hardware fault, and on a machine that is so new I would want a replacement, not a repair.

If you cannot get your dealer to replace the machine, call Apple directly. Explain your dilemma and insist that they arrange a replacement.

Best of luck.

I will bet you that it is the battery on your main board.

Do you have a old one to try out? It's the same battery in most old macs.

I have seen the problem with two of our new G4's. Almost guaranteed to be your fix. You can probably get a new one in your electro/camera shop.
