Dual USB iBook - G3 - M6497- 500 MHZ - 256MB - 10GB -COMBO - How far can I push it

Hi all,

I have just recuperated a Dual USB iBook - G3 - M6497- 500 MHZ - 256MB - 10GB -COMBO - OSX 10.2.8

I was hoping someone could tell me, realistically speaking how far can I push this baby ? Meaning I am running Mac OSX 10.2.8 and I'd like to upgrade to Panther and possibly Tiger.

Naturally I will be adding RAM - as I believe my limit is of 640 MB but I'm not positive on that one.

So whats my limit as far as RAM goes and what OSX should I realistically be aiming for ?

except I just tried to install 10.6.4 from my friends DVD - he got it w his macbook - but it just gives me a Kernel error with at the bottom :
panis : we are hanging here...

is bc it isnt a retail CD version or... do I need to gradually upgrade from 10.2.8 on... ?

Also I have a 30gb hard disc around that ran on a ibook w Panther - if i install the disc effectively replacing my current 10gb on my current and working ibook, will it start running Panther or am i completely insane just so even think that it will ?

You cannot use any Apple CD/DVD from another Mac. They are model specific only.

You must use retail installers.

That macbook installer won't work on your ibook. You would need a retail version of Tiger. You can likely boot from the other disk running Panther. To make sure you can place the drive in a 2.5" ATA enclosure then connect with firewire to the ibook. Then go into boot manager by booting the ibook holding the option key. Then select the Panther drive as the boot volume.
