DVD/CD not visible

I loaded a DVD into my MacBook Pro but it isn't recognized. Then I am not able to eject it either. It is a rather old DVD (2004), but i have noticed the same with some audiobooks. Any suggestions how to overcome this problem?

The question is not how is your DVD; the question is: "How old is your MacBook Pro?" It sounds like your DVD drive has stopped seating discs properly. I had a similar issue. After restarting the computer several times, I was able to coax it to eject the disc. You may then have the computer repaired at your leisure. I strongly recommend that you take the computer to a certified technician who works on Macs. I strongly recommend against attempting the repair yourself. If your computer is still under warranty, or if it is still protected by AppleCare, then the repair will be free of additional charge.

My MacBook Pro is a 2009 model. I will try a restart and also a newer DVD. Thanks.
If you are able to get the disc out of your drive, then I strongly recommend that you not insert another disc until you have your computer serviced. By the way, my MacBook Pro with the problematic SuperDrive is also a 2009 model.

Actually, after shutting down several heavy programs (incl. iPhoto, Photoshop, Keynote etc.), with several large files open, the DVD Player appeared with the DVD visible in Finder. Maybe my machine just had too much on its mind?
