The AAC (Advanced Audio Codec), the audio format supported by Apple's iTunes Music Store, has been chosen as a key future DVD Audio disc technology by the standard's governing body, the DVD Forum.

According to an unnamed Forum member cited by web site High Fidelity Review, AAC beat Microsoft's Windows Media 9 format, MP3 and Sony's ATRAC because it "sounded better than the others".

this is probably not direct apple news... but it does involve aac.. and im sure we all wanna see AAC spread throughout the world !

And heise.de (and macnews.net.tc) mention that High Fidelity Review is just wrong. Decision hasn't happened yet.

Hmm, well, MacUser UK seems to think it's gone ahead:

AAC format adopted for use with DVD-Audio

The DVD Forum has decided to adopt AAC as the format for computer-compatible music files on DVD-Audio discs.

DVD-A is being touted as the successor to CD for those who want high-resolution digital music files. However they are not compatible with current computers, nor can they be ripped and copied onto portable devices such as the iPod.

Consequently the DVD Forum has approved AAC as the format for copies of the high-resolution files. The forum's working group was reportedly attracted by both the quality of AAC and its capacity for digital rights management (DRM). The AAC files will be stored on a DVD-ROM section of the DVD-A disc

AAC is the format that Apple uses for the iTunes Music Store, although its claims of audio superiority are hotly disputed by fans of the MP3 standard and Microsoft's proprietary WMA format.

Record labels will not be forced to include a DVD-ROM zone; if they do, however, they will have to use AAC under the terms of their licence.
