dvd shuts down the mac

whenever i use my dvd the i mac shuts down, like i pulled the plug. No report, no evidence of somthing crashing. Either burning a DVD or copying the files to the desktop causes the same problem. I just re istalled mac osx the problem insists.

Have to say its a hardware problem if you mean shut down in terms of powers off the computer. I'd run disk utility to verify your hard drive to see what errors come up and check your drives SMART status first of all.
