DVDs & CDs will not mount

I have an imac G-4 running OS 10.3.9. I was trying to burn a DVD-R with toast, and when I inserted the blank disk, it was ejected and toast requested that I insert a blank disk. I thought that maybe I had mistakenly put in a disk I already recorded, or maybe a bum disk, so I tried another...same thing. I then tried to insert a Music CD...it would't mount. I tried a number of disks, still no luck.

I then tried to verify and repair permissions with disk utility. It ran for maybe 5 minutes and then an error message appeared "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility" Same think happened when I relaunched.

I just burned a DVD the other day, and it was fine. Now when I insert a disk, I don't hear the usual subtle hum when a disk was being mounted...I get nothing.

I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but this appeared to happen right after I installed the updates to iTunes, Safari and Apple i-pod updater.
