DVI Problems. Screen not found

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can offer any advice. I'm afraid this is a "working one day but not the next" type of problem.

I have a G4 Powerbook (OS X 10.4.5) and a Formac 2010 Digital Display which have been working fine together for about a year. Plugged the DVI lead from the display into the Powerbook a couple of days ago and the 2010 display remained dark with its power light blinking indicating it wasn't getting a video signal. The Powerbook continued to work fine, apparently blissfully unaware that the external monitor was connected.

There was no evidence of the 2010 monitor being connected when I looked in the 'Display System Preferences' nor did the 'System Profiler' appear aware that an external monitor was connected.

I connected the 2010 display to another G4 and it seems to work fine; I connected a CRT display to the DVI port of the powerbook and that seemed to work fine too with both 'Display System Preference' and 'System Profiler' recognising the display.

Unfortunately I don't have a second Digital display with which to test the DVI port on the Mac so I've not been able to do that check.

I've tried restarting, trashing preferences, zapped PRAM, checked powerbook mains supply (the Formac monitor apparently wont work unless the powerbook is plugged into the mains) but all to no avail.

I guess it's possible that the DVI port on the powerbook is faulty. Does anyone know whether it could be faulty in such a way that a CRT monitor would work fine but not a Digital one. It just seems a touch unlikely and that a software issue is the more likely problem.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Ed

PS I've posted this on the Peripherals section too but it really feels like a software problem. I hope this doesn't contravene and rules.
