Elgato Turbo264 HD & DVD Creation

Hello all,

Although I think I know the (sad) answer already, I am writing this post wishing that someone here shows me I got it all wrong: More specifically, I bought the Elgato Turbo264 HD USB card, hoping that it will speed up the process of authoring DVDs from avi files. My MacBook Pro 2.53 with 8GB RAM needs more than 1 hour for the encoding process, so I hoped Elgato would serve me just fine.

Unfortunately, it seems that Elgato is useful only for creating MPEG-4 files: A nice feature for converting videos for my iPhone, but doesn't seem to help DVD creation...

Am I wrong somewhere? Does Elgato provide any help in DVD authoring in any way? Or I paid € 130 for something of no much use for me?

Well, after some extensive Google-ing, I now know for certain that the Elgato card indeed does only H.264 encoding... This is quite unfortunate, as this format suits only my iPhone when I want to transfer movies to it (not a common case).

None of my two DVD players at home support the H.264 format: In fact, I suspect there are not many players in the market supporting it, as it is a quite new one... I was thinking of buying Apple TV which is H.264-friendly, but I read that it needs a widescreen TV to work, which is restrictive.

So, it seems that this was not a very wise purchase... Too bad.
