Email doesn't work after updating to Leopard

I installed Leopard yesterday and had the exact same problems. The failure to quit was an easy fix I found in Apple's online tech support. Here is the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2537

I'm still working on how to get the messages that were in my mailboxes before I upgraded. Good luck.

Same problem. I upgraded yesterday and supposedly kept my old messages. I found them in my Library/mail/ various .mbox files /messages/ lists of messages with .emlx extensions. On another user's account I managed to get Mail to work by erasing something or other, I can't remember what, and I parameterised it afresh - it couldn't find the messages from the Tiger version presumably because I had erased something vital, but could import from .mbox files, but only those that had been deliberately exported from another machine beforehand, not the ones carried over in the upgrade. I now think I could have have replaced the basic mailbox POP file trees I had just created with the ones imported from Tiger and which I had saved elsewhere, and it might have worked.

I then switched back to my own account and followed the instructions in your link exactly, and lo and behold all my Tiger Mail messages were duly imported.

Perhaps you erased something else? or moved something?

Best of luck!

Were you able to Send mail? I can't do that either. You answer sounds hopeful for the receiving part though. Thanks

I had the same problem, here is how the apple tech helped me fix it:

1. Quit Mail
2. Got to your "..../library/mail" folder.
3. Drag it to your desktop.
4. Restart your computer
5. Launch mail... follow the initial set-up steps.
6. If you would like your old emails, you can now "Import Mailboxes" and import your .mboxs from the older Mail folder on your desktop. Mail has already created a new "Mail" folder in your library. Do not put the old one back.

Apparently one of the items in the old folder is not compatible with Leopard version of Mail.
