I am desperate to run an unerase search on a drive taken out of a G3 laptop (system 8.5) that is now inside a USB external box.
I have undelete software that works on my Intel Mini (10.4.1) BUT the drive will not mount properly on this system. I also have an Ibook (10.2.8 ) that the drive WILL mount on BUT the undelete software will not work on this system!
How can I bring the software and the external HD together?
Thinking I had a bright idea, I connected the USB HD to the Ibook and networked the iBook to the Mini, hoping to access the HD from the Mini that way. I put the drive icon in the iBook's Public folder, hoping to get at it via the Mini. That did not work, and I don't know how to get the drive in the iBook recognised by the Mini - which would seem to be a solution...?
I also thought of creating a disk image of the drive on the iBook, but since the owner of the iBook (my wife) cannot remember the password for it (grr), I cannot perform this. (Would it have worked anyway?) Due to this I also cannot change any permissions for the drive - not that I'm sure this would do any good.
All I want to do is undelete emails from the drive, which works perfectly when plugged into the 10.2.8 iBook. The first time I connected it to the Mini (10.4.1) the drive did show up as an icon, but something was wrong and now it won't recognise it all at on subsequent tries. Its existence is invisible to the Mini and the software cannot tap into it, although Boomerang does stop searching and appear to recognise it IF I unplug the drive. Then if I put it back in, the software just doesn't 'get' it, so no go.
I have broken apart and totally ruined my fragile G3 in order to get at this drive - it was the only way to get it out (even though I bought the correct screwdrivers), so now there is no going back. I did try to network the original G3 to the Mini, but this was very complicated due to the network protocol wall that exists between 8.5 and 10.4., and even though I managed to do that, using the undelete software to interrogate the 8.5 system wouldn't work since it could only connect one way from the G3 to the Mini, so it was a useless effort.
Now I'm at my wits end as to what to do. Any ideas very much appreciated. Many thanks.
