Error when trashing???

I have a G3 and I'm using OS 9.2.1. For some reason I can't trash anything and none of the files are locked. When I try to empty my trash I get an error message "The command could not be completed, because an error of type -127 occurred."

This could be the first sign of Hard Drive failure. It suggests a corrupted file or at least a corrupted entry in the desktop database. I replace my HD every 3 years whether I need to or not! I recommend you install a new HD, reinstall the system, then copy all your files onto it. The simplest way could be to replace the CD drive with the old drive while you do the copying.

As a stop-gap you could run "Disk Warrior" but I would still replace the HD ASAP.

The Error -127 is an Internal File System error. (likely a bad directory structure)
Boot to your OS 9.x install CD, open the Utilities folder there, and run the Disk First Aid to be more sure of your hard drive. You may find that this will fail. If so, you should find a copy of Norton SystemWorks and repair your files system. Norton is OK for OS 9, but I wouldn't run it on a hard drive with OS X. DiskWarrior may also repair this.
You might end up needing to ERASE the drive (you'll lose everything that's not backed up) to get past this problem. but this would be your LAST resort.
