Ethernet Connection

Hi

I'm having a problem using my Built -in Ethernet.
I have iMac running Macosx 10.4.11. Everytime I connect a cable it doesn't register it in the Network Panel, It tells me that,

'The cable for Built - in Ethernet is not plugged in.'

I have tried a couple of different cables, neither work, but they do work with
my Macbook running Macosx 10.5.6. So I don't think there's a problem with the cables.

Do I need to configure anything or should they work automatically as they do on the Macbook?
