Nagromme
If you have a pre-FireWire bronze PowerBook G3 (Lombard), or various other iMacs and iBooks, you may be looking forward to downloading Mac OS 10.1.2 in the hopes that your built-in video board will finally be functional. Unfortunately, these machines (with Rage Pro and similar ATI boards) are still unsupported, despite meeting the system requirements listed on the Mac OS X box and Web site.

CNN: Apple Promises 'Revolutionary' New Product at MWSF

Reader Juan Torress sends us this tantalizing story from CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/ptech/12/19/apple.revolutionary.idg/index.html
Just as it did prior to the release of the iPod, CNN reports Apple has sent out a mysterious invitation to the press. This time, Apple promises on January 7, 2002 at Macworld San Francisco it will release a "innovative, revolutionary, and different" product for "worldwide release" that is "powerful, user-friendly, and eye-catching" and will have "enormous impact."
What's beautiful about this is that this description can fit anything you want to. Best money is on a flat-panel iMac, but other than that, let the rumors fly. Just don't expect to see an overhyped personal transportation device says Go2Mac staff.

Hi, thought you might enjoy a Mac modification I applied to a Mac G4 called "Project: BlueIce G4." Basically I took a G4 cut some window holes in the chassis, made the case covers transparent and installed some case lighting. The result is the "BlueIce G4."

Jobs to Upstage Gates at Revised Keynote [Updated]
Wed, 19 Dec 2001, 01:45
Lando Calrissian
MacWorld UK is theorizing that Steve Jobs may have wanted to get his Macworld Expo keynote address in before the Bill Gates gives his at the Consumer Electronics Show.
Interestingly, Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates is giving a keynote at another show, CES (Consumer Electronics Show), on 6.30pm Monday evening in Las Vegas - which would have preceded the Jobs Macworld Expo announcements.
Now, Steve is ahead of Bill again.
In October, Apple announced its iPod digital-music player one day before Microsoft introduced its Windows XP operating system.
Another theory is that the Apple booth is going to be so decked out with new LCD iMacs and faster G4 (not G5) towers that Steve does not want anyone to see the show floor until after the keynote address.
Gift Guide: iBook (Dual USB) for US$894 [Updated]
Wed, 19 Dec 2001, 00:01
from the Let's-Make-A-Deal dept.
Rodney Petersen, Mike Baker
I just received an email offer from PC Connection (MacConnection) offering the 500 MHz iBook Rev. A for US$894. This is after the US$200 instant rebate and US$100 Apple rebate. Offer expires 12/31/01. Could it be that a new rev of the iBook will be out for the new year?
Mike Baker writes:
MacConnection does have a US$894 iBook deal, but it is not a harbinger of new iBooks. Rather, this model is discontinued. It is the previous 500 MHz system (10 GB drive) with CD. This is still a fantastic deal. I ordered one for my wife.
MacConnection is also offering the same model in a bundle without the US$200 instant rebate. The bundle adds a Nintendo GameBoy Advance, two games, and two sets of batteries. The net cost for this bundle is US$1094.
Universal to Copy Protect All CDs

Lando Calrissian
According to this surprising story at Slashdot "Universal Plans to copy protect all CDs which will render them unplayable on Macs, DVD Players, PS2s, and some CD Players."
Wow. Anyone else worried about not being able to pay for music that you purchased on your Macintosh computer? I suspect that Macintosh users will have to re-consider buying any CDs from Universal Music Group until this issue gets addressed.
Bah Humbug: Cingular Blocks Third Party Ringtones
Tue, 18 Dec 2001, 12:00
Lando Calrissian
It appears that U.S. cellular phone giant Cingular has begun blocking all third-party ringtones. This means that you can no longer send ringtones to your Cingular phone for free from cool web sites like cellphoneuser.com since Cingular began charging US$0.99 each for them some time this summer.
