I am just trying to alternate the row colors of excel by selecting all cells and then going to autoformat and selecting "List 1." It then takes forever to load and freezes. I have to command + alt +esc to get out of excel. Does anyone know why this is happening?! I have mac excel 2008. Any help please!

Can you please be more clear on how many rows are we talking about? What is the OS and Excel versions? If what I understood is correct, why are you selecting ALL cells? Just for testing?

thanks for replying!

i am on the Leopard OS and 2008 excel version. I clicked the select all button located on the top left of the spreadsheet and then just followed these instructions on this website:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HA011373371033.aspx

i want to have the same format throughout so i selected all the cells, but even if i select a few cells and try the formatting, it still freezes up. im worried about viruses that my mac might have caught or any other defects. =[

If I do the same thing selecting all cells, I have the same behavior - it simply freeze the Excel, then I have to force kill it. Doing the same in Windows, it works smoothly.

But in the other hand, if I select fewer lines/columns it works perfectly. How many rows/columns are you selecting, so I can try to reproduce it here?

oh wow! I actually tried a few cells and it worked. I tried like 6 rows. Thank you for the help! But, how come I can't select all and apply the format throughout? Is it just too big?

This is a good question for Microsoft and not for me :)

I also get disappointed with some features that work perfectly in Windows, but when you tried in the office for MAC it simply won't work. Not 100% compatible with MAC, this is what they should advertise in their boxes. That's the reason I'm slowly moving to 100% of Apple solutions (iLife and iWork).
