Excel X for Mac styles problem

I'm using Excel for Mac Service Release 1 on a Mac G4 with OS X 10.4.11.
I created a fairly simple Excel spreadsheet using the Wizard (I don't use this program much, so bear with me, please) ;)

column A is text, column B is Dates, Column C is dollar amounts.

It seemed to work fine. Then a few days later I opened it, and the Dates in column B all appear as numbers.

I tried re-formatting the styles, but if I change format in one column, then ALL the columns that have numbers in them will change to the same format.
That is, if I change the style to Dates in column B, then the numbers in column C also change to dates.

Can anyone help me figure this out ?

Thanks!!

Sounds odd!

Try formatting a cell somewhere else on the spreadsheet and using the format painter.

Are you selecting a named area instead of a cell?

Not sure this helps. Could be a bug.

I am using an even older version than 2008, so that may be part of the problem. I tried it on a newer mac laptop with Excel 2008 and it works fine. I saved it and opened it on the older machine and it looked ok too.

Thanks for your response.
