Excessively large hardware address..

I got a weird one here...

I just noticed recently that I was having trouble completing downloads off the internet (FTP, WWW, NNTP). I decided to do a netstat -i to see what was going on and this is what I got:

Notice the last one on en0... That just does not look right. I thought it should show an IP address, but instead it looks like a hardware address built for King Kong.. I thought this would be a good starting point to see if this is creating a overhead and causing an interruption in my network connection.

If anyone has any ideas what this may be and if it's normal, please let me know so I can move on and look into other possibilities of my download interruptions..

Thanks for any assistance in this.:p

I just did the netstat -i and got pretty much the same thing.

[localhost:~] mactech% netstat -i
Name Mtu Network Address Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Coll
lo0 16384 <Link> 26986 0 26986 0 0
lo0 16384 127 localhost 26986 0 26986 0 0
en0 1500 <Link> 00.30.65.c1.7a.42 268768 0 437134 0 0

en0 1500 192.168.1 192.168.1.100 268768 0 437134 0 0
en0 1500 192.168.1 192.168.1.102 268768 0 437134 0 0
en0 1500 (255)fa.80.87.85.93.93.00.00. weird stuff continued here (truncated cause it messed up web page )

I don't see any interruptions in my LAN/Router switch but still get the same strange stuff you see.
If you notice the 'Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Coll' #s are the same as en0 in both my situation and yours. I see no Collisions or errors in your figures or mine.
What kind of errors or interruptions are you seeing?

I first noticed it when using my newgroup reader and the downloads would just stall.

Then when I download a file off a web page, the download manager will stall and give a message 'waiting for data'.

I can still view web pages and recieve email without any problems though. I ran a couple of ping tests and all is ok there.

I do however have a constant activity coming from my HP AIO communications extension. This app maintains a constant connection to a network printer. I have quit the app and still have this problem so I have eliminated that issue.

I plan to log into my root profile when I get home to test out if it's my profile.

This could all be in my head too. I will go more in depth this weekend to see what else I can come up with.

Any ideas of where else I should look into?

Thanks for the help.

I repeated that netstat several times and that 'strange' # is always the same. What are you using to connect your Mac together and does it route to the internet? My switch/router has a DHCP server in it. I will try this from a couple of linux boxes we use as web servers and see what I get.

Do you have NetMonitor? I suggest getting it and placing it in your menubar, then go to a iTunes 128k stream and you will know real soon if there is a packet loss or connection problems. I see a nice steady stream 95% of the time.

Your mention of a network printer really struck home. A Win2k print server we use, will go to 100% cpu when trying to talk to some printers, until we went to LPR. It had an HP Jet Direct box. All other stuff on that win2k box would slow to a halt. Possibly increase the time-outs so if it cannot maintain its constant communication it doesn't interfere with other protocols. Just a thought.

Yea.. I have an app that loads in the dock to show netload (i think it's called netstaticsdock).

I have been streaming audio from iTunes without any trouble at all (I'll be sure to check that again tonight, before I prove myself wrong and shove my foot any further in my mouth:p ). I just seems to be from websites and newsgroups so far in term of download stall ocurring.

I have a mixture of computers (Mac OS X, Mac OS 9, Win XP, Win 98) all linked to a Linksys Router.

The router does not give out leases and does have some static mappings for certain protocols (telnet, ftp, remote access). I transfer files between my mac and pc via ftp (appletalk is waaayyy too slow) and I have not seen any problems with that. So if I make a guess to what is the likely problem device, I would have to say it's my router. I will reset the router tonight and run some tests right afterwards. I should also disconnect everyone else of the router too.

I have had this setup for about a year and some things have changed mildly onver the year, but I have not run into anything like this. I have had trouble with the router before when all traffic stopped. I just unplugged the router and everything worked fine after that.

I'll check out netmonitor and see if that helps me in my quest.

Who uses AppleTalk anymore, hehe. NetMonitor will run in the menu bar and give a scrolling graphic of your connection, kind of like the CPU monitor will. iTunes can recover from packet loss and you would never know. The visual feed back NetMonitor gives is great.
Do you open Console to look for errors there?
Good luck.

I would appear that it is indeed something with my router config.

I turned off the router and back on and the problem has dissapeared. The next time it starts up, I'll check out the log and find out what is slowing down the router..

I like Network Monitor. The option to put it up in the menu is cool. Thanks for the tip.

I check out console, but there is a lot of information in there that make no sense at all. I do have some DNS errors, but I'm too lazy to fix em up, but I plan to work on it soon:D .
