I was installing snow leapard when half way through the optical drive stopped working. My macbook continuted to work fine under the windows partition. I installed a new optical drive and tried to fix the MAC OS. The computer kept randomly freezing within a few minutes of use. It still worked fine under windows but I really wanted to get the MAC OS working again so I formatted the entire drive and tried to start fresh. I still had problems with it freezing while using the optical drive but after about 10 attempts I finally got everything installed. The macbook continued to freeze though several minutes after boot up (either with the newly installed OS or from the boot disk). I started it in safe mode, reset the PRAM, ran a hardware test (all ok) but no luck. When I started in single user mode and ran a /sbin/fsck/ an error showed up saying "Firewire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5811.....packet error...is this a problem with the firmware?? How can I fix it??

Yikes! May want to try different RAM by I doubt that would make much difference. Check to see if the machine is warm when it freezes up. Sounds like it very well may be heat related like a bad heatsink or main logic board. Other than what you've already described it sounds like its doing it whether its booted to disk or hard drive so those are ruled out.

Yes it does seem to run longer when it first starts up. Today I reinstalled tiger and it seemed to work fine. Then I tried to put leopard on and it froze repeatedly (probably because it was warm). I'll try again tomorrow.
