External Display - mini-DVI to video component

Hello,

I am unsure if this is the appropriate location to post this thread, but I thought this location would be sufficient.

I am having a problem configuring my mac to display a movie on a tv. I am using the Dynex mini-DVI to video component. I plugged the component into my mac and the extension cable to the tv. Once the mac was on, the only thng the tv did was display static. I tried searching through the display options to reset the resolution and and refresh rate, but was unsuccessful.

The tv I am trying to set up is a Sony 40" HDtv.

If anyone may have the answer, or could lead me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

There is an option in the Display system preference panel to "detect displays" - try that. Also, if you see static, you are looking at an antenna/cable signal, not video.

Thanks for your reply. I tried the "detect displays" button, but nothing appears to happen. When I used the word "static", it was actually the wrong word to use. I do see a slight picture of my mac desktop on the tv, but it is black and white, with resolution and refresh issues. I returned the Dynex Mini-DVI to video adapter in exchange for the Apple Mini-DVI to video adapter. Once I plugged the Apple adapter in just the same as I did with the Dynex adapter, it worked perfectly. The only thing that needed attention was a color and contrast adjustment.

I had a similar problem where I was running my White Macbook through the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter, using an RCA cable (the yellow one), and only getting a black and white, low quality picture.

My solution was to go to the display options in my macbook's system preferences, and change the refresh rate from 60hz to 50hz. Voila, colour and good picture! I guess my TV is just really old. At first after solving that problem, however, I had some strange and annoying cascading black dots shimmying across the screen, but after 3 or 4 minutes of playing a film they disappeared.

Pretty cool!

I tried going into system preferences and changing the refresh rate but don't have the option of 50 hz.

Any suggestions?
