external dvd drive problem....

Hi
I got an imac running with 10.4.4 700 mhz power pc g3 1 gb ram
i just bought an external dvd drive to make the upgrade to 10.4 (since my imac only had a cd rom)
my problem is that the dvd drive wont play dvd movies but it will burn dvds and it did read the dvds to make the upgrade to 10.4
but now every time i put a dvd movie and try to open it with the dvd player it shows an error
"there was an initiallization error a valid dvd drive could not be found. [-70012]"

this to me doesnt make any sense...

the dvd drive is a Lacie d2 dvd rw

It might be a third-party player problem. I know you can't burn DVDs through apple apps like iDVD with external burners, so maybe it's the same problem with playing DVDs through Apple DVD Player too.

can someone confirm this?
