external firewire drives

i have a strange problem with mac os x.2.4
when i connect an external firewire drive it doesn't mount anymore
when i restart the mac in os 9 and connect the drive, it appears whithout any problem
on other macs with the same system, the drive appears in mac os x
what is happening here?

Just a couple of questions...

Does it show up in the finder under "Computer" but just not on the desk top?

Once it should be mounted what is the output from typing the command mount in at the terminal?

Finally what do you get when you enter this in the terminal ps -aux | grep automount
