External hard disk error

Hi,
I have a new imac, system 10.1.3.
My external LaCie 20m firewire hard disk is playing up. Sometimes it appears on the desktop and others it will not mount.
On using Disk Utility, I get the message (in red) Invalid B-tree node size.
The volume needs to be repaired.
I have tried to repair but it can't.
What seems to be the problem????

you are going to need a third party diagnostic and repair program. I would recommend DiskWarrior/PlusOptimizer from Alsoft or TechtoolPro or Drive10 from Micromat. Disk Utility and the fsck command line only fix so much.
 
your very welcome. hope you get it fixed. problems like yours aren't normally major unless you let then go unresolved for a while. they are fairly common - less with osx than os 9, but they can happen for several reasons that can't be foreseen - like power outages, forced reboots, ie funk ups, etc. (ok you can expect ie to funk up);)
