External Media Storage

Sogni

*gone*
Well, I finally went back to college and in my Media Arts class the teacher told us something that blew my mind and got me VERY excited!

We can now bring in our own Firewire Hard Drives! YES!!! (that, or use 100mb Zips, or share CDRW and DVDRAM Drives - uh, pass).

Now my question is, which one?

I am very limited on funds (beyond broke) so something cheap but yet reliable - I don't care if it's slow - as long as it is not TOO slow.

I would like it to be:
o Self Powered
o Over a gig of storage
o Firewire Connection is a MUST
o Compatible between OS X, OS 9 and Windows (well, Windows it not THAT important, but still would be nice since I have a few PCs)
o Would also like it to have USB 2.0 but it is not a high priority as I am planning to get a Firewire card for at least one of my PCs.

Hmmm... why does everything I just said SCREAMS "iPod" back at me? :)

Are there any other options (cheaper than an iPod? Yeah, I already said I am broke! lol)

And how well does an iPod act as a hard drive? Any speed or other annoyance problems with it?

Yeah, the iPod would be a perfect soulution here. I have read many reports on using the iPod as a portable hardrive, and all of them were positive. I own one myself and I have to say, Fire Wire IS blazing fast! And one more credit is that you get the best mp3 player available.
Other than that, I know there is many good firewire drives for mac and imomega has many good solutions.

Hope this helps!

I was finally able to take the iPod for a full un-interupted 30 Minute (or so) test drive... And boy did I test every possible thing I can think of on it! :D

It did aprox 1 Gig transfer to/from the computer in about 2 or 3 minutes (didn't time it exactly). Perfect!

Other than trying to figure out how to get the money for it - I will defenatly buy an iPod! Already saving my dimes! :)

I have a question tho...
When I played back the audio through the included headphones - is the audio low at full volume? There was a Ti Powerbook beside the iBook running a demo with sound - and I just could not get the volume nearly loud enough to even come close to drowning the sound from the Ti... is this normal?

Not that I'm trying to blow my ears out - but I would have though it'd be louder (at full volume)... Or was something wrong with the settings, the iPod or the earphones I was testing it on?

Either way - I'm sold! :D

My iPod gives plenty of volume out. I usually keep it at around 25% when listening in headphones, and it's just fine.

When I hook up my iPod to my casette adapter for my car, I turn up the iPod to about 80%, so that the sound going into the car stereo is loud and clear (without fuzz), but not so high as to be over-modulated and distorted. Then I just adjust the car volume knob.

iPod. No car is complete without it.

Lacie External FireWire drives are good. I just bought my sister an 80gig drive for uni. Works great in X,9 and windows... They require a power cable however.

You can get a pocketdrive firewire (lacie again) that are self-powered.
