External monitor becomes primary when waking from sleep

My external monitor unintentionally becomes my primary monitor when I wake my MacBook Pro (MBP) from sleep. The monitor on my Mac Book Pro remains blank unless I unplug the external monitor from my MBP, wait until the screen activates on the MBP, and then plug in the external monitor again, at which time things work correctly. I am running OS 10.6.4. The problem only started recently, perhaps on a security update. MacBook Pro specs below:

External monitor is Dell 1907FP 17"
Connected to digital port via mini adapter for MacBook

MacBookPro 5,2
Intel Core 2 Duo
2.66 GHz processor
Boot ROM version MBP52.008E.B05

Wondered if anyone else has had this issue or could help?
