External monitor shows only hard drive icon

My screen backlight in my extremely old but trusty Pismo G3 needs to be replaced -- got the pink screen treatment, now can only see whats on the screen under special light conditions (and then, barely). In the meantime, I thought my best solution would be to hook up an external monitor until I can find time to replace it. Thats all fine & dandy except it only displays the hard drive icon when I turn everything on. My cursor tracks on it but it won't open the hard drive when I double click. My G3 is working on 10.2.6 and the monitor is a AOC 7Elr(? sorry...darn bifocals).

What have I forgotten to do or done wrong?
