I'm gonna buy an external fw cdreader, and have planned to exchange it with my superdrive, which is really to slow for a daily use.
But I've heard that iDvd will not be abble to recognize the superdrive if it's external.
Is it true, and is there a way to deal with it ?

Just buy an internal dvd - R drive and the firewire external enclosure. I saw some around the web a few months ago, they are a little pricey, but i imagine they are well worth it.
 
I thought the restriction was to "apple built-in superdrive", that's why I believed there was a way to tell iDVD that the drive that was the "applebuilt-in" has changed its location.
that's a pity ! we really need a third 5.1/4 bay !
 
I'd just leave the superdrive in... my external burner performs really really well on the firewire connection... which is technically faster than the internal bus.
